Overview
This is a math play book written by an elementary school teacher and mom at children’s eye level. Without difficult, boring workbooks or online learning services, children can have fun with materials easily found at home and clearly understand the basic math concepts that are good to know before starting school.
As the author is an elementary school teacher, the games are based on the curriculum and evenly cover its five areas: numbers and operations, geometry, measurement, patterns, and data and probability. Beyond counting and arithmetic, children experience every basic concept through play, from points, lines, plane figures and solid figures to length, weight and telling time, often missed in preschool workbooks, as well as changing patterns, making tables and graphs, and predicting likelihood.
Focusing on concepts does not make this a workbook disguised as a play book. Every game was played by the author with her own child and stays true to the purpose of play, so children achieve two goals at once: having fun and naturally learning math concepts.
Each activity explains the math concept it covers, how to prepare and play, tips for talking at the child’s level and advice from the teacher mom. Templates are provided by QR code, an “Understanding the Concepts” section opens each area to show what should be learned, and math concept cards are included as an appendix.
About the Author - Jang, Yewon
A private-education minimalist, elementary school teacher and mother of a five-year-old. Concerned about students who disliked and struggled with math, she researched math games that make the subject easier and more fun and used them in class. Today she shares on social media the know-how she has gained playing math games at home with her daughter.
Years of observation taught her that children give up on math not because they lack talent, but because the wrong direction and methods of study leave gaps in their basic concepts. She wrote this book to help preschool and early elementary children effectively acquire the most essential math concepts.
