Overview

A Guide to Brain-Boosting Body Play introduces body play (sensory play) that helps stimulate a child's brain according to each developmental stage, from age 1 in early childhood to age 8 in the early school years. It presents structured, programmed activities that can be done easily without special materials, and explains in plain terms why moving the body matters and which parts of the brain are stimulated and developed during sensory play.
The book was written by Song Woojin, who majored in occupational therapy, earned a doctorate in public health and has built extensive clinical, research and therapy experience, together with Lee Seungmin and Jung Dahyo, sensory integration therapists with rich field experience working closely with children. It is filled with content useful to everyone from sensory integration therapists to parents who want to know how to play with their children.
Each activity comes with preparation steps, instructions, and visual materials such as photos and videos so it is easy to follow, along with ways to adjust the difficulty and extension activities to try once a child gets used to it. The developmental areas and detailed elements stimulated by each activity are shown visually, and the book explains in detail how seemingly simple body play stimulates the brain and has a positive effect, revealing the relationship between the senses and the brain. Each age section (1-2, 2-3, 4-6 and 7-8) ends with a sample four-week home program effective for brain stimulation and sensory integration.
Since COVID-19, delays in children's physical development have been reported at serious levels, and concern about developmental gaps is growing. In this situation, the book will be a great help not only to parents who want to play with their children at home but also to sensory integration research institutes and developmental centers, and to kindergartens, elementary schools, libraries and institutions that want to offer sensory and brain-stimulation play.
